In the newspaper world, there’s a thing called “burying the lede,” where you gloss over what is actually the most newsworthy part of the story because you’re focused on something else. Well, in my excitement yesterday over the possibility of a Hawk Street Viaduct elevator, I kinda buried the lead on the actual story from a 1914 Albany city cabinet meeting, which prompted the headline “Police Not To Have Women.”
“At the meeting of the mayor’s cabinet yesterday afternoon interesting reports were received from all departments showing the activities of the city government the past month. The request of the Woman’s club to have women police officers appointed was deferred because of the fact that the police force was recently increased and the police work of women is in an experimental stage.”
Well, I guess that’s that, then. I’d be curious to know how long the question of female officers was deferred; I’m guessing you could measure it in decades.
