In time for track season, more horsies. There has been racing in Saratoga since at least 1847, with thoroughbred racing beginning in 1863. This cursory reading of the Saratoga Race Course Wikipedia entry exhausts Hoxsie’s knowledge of, and interest in, the sport of kings. Another early 20th-century postcard from the Boston Public Library’s collection.

I have happy memories of the Saratoga track in August. I went twice, once by myself carrying bets for my fellow employees of the James Restaurant in Schenectady–no big winners–and anyway a book was being run just up the street. But my protective chefs–Greek–did not approve of a young college girl, summer job, placing bets that way.
But the same year I went to the track with my best friend, in town to accompany me home–and won $50.00. A lot of money in those days. I treated both of us to supper at the best Italian restaurant in the universe, Cornells on Van Vranken Avenue-or the one next door, can’t remember its name, alas. -
