Ale for families and invalids

From The Troy Daily Whig, February 5, 1873, an ad for the Star Brewery, 146 North Fourth Street in Troy. “A superior article of Ale now on hand, in barrels, half barrels and quarter barrels, put up expressly for the use of Families and Invalids …”

The brewery of Theophilus W. Sands was reckoned at a value of $40,000 in 1870, and he produced 8000 barrels of ale a year.

Presumably the healthy and single need not have applied.

North Fourth Street, with the logic that only Troy could apply, ran north from Federal Street, between Sixth and Eighth. So, if you were going east on, say, Jacob, you’d cross Sixth, then North Fourth, then Eighth. After that, there be monsters.
