Okay, here’s a newspaper promotion you don’t see much anymore: in 1921, with a six-month subscription to the Troy Record, you could get a discounted house lot in Colonie Estates. It was “situated near Latham’s Corners within a short ride of Schenectady, Stop 36½. It is an ideal country for homes of people employed in Schenectady.
“You know Ford’s new plant is under construction at Green Island and Colonie Estates is the logical place for home-building – just a short ride from Green Island.” So with a subscription to the Record, you could get that lot for only $64.50. Even for 1921, that seems like a bargain. No more than five lots to a person!
Although this was a promotion by the Troy Record, this ad appeared in the Schenectady Gazette.
I’m not clear exactly where Colonie Estates was located. It appears in some other documents, but without a definitive location. Latham’s Corners was about where today’s Route 2 and Old Loudon Road meet. I’ll presume Stop 36½ was the trolley stop, so if anyone has a good trolley map, give me a shout: @HoxsieAlbany or click on the “contact me” link below.
