In 1891, there was a whole lot less RPI than there is today. And more College Pond, apparently. This map shows the western edge of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Eighth Street in Troy, when the venerable technical academy was still neighbored to the north by the Troy Hospital, and to the south by M. Warren and St. Joseph’s Seminary. Today, of course, RPI has taken all this land and more, and there is no sign of College Pond, where today there is a large parking lot behind North Hall.
I love that the Troy Bicycle Club’s velodrome features so prominently on this map.
To the south, the DeGolyer Varnish Works.
