While we’re looking at bridges across the Mohawk, here’s a glimpse of the railroad bridge that sits just downriver from the Western Gateway bridge. I’m not entirely sure when it was built, but as work was being done on it in the summer of 1978, it caught fire and the creosote-soaked railroad ties made an effusive display of smoke. Created in the “built-to-last” era, the bridge suffered no significant damage, even though it had been, you know, completely on fire.
